Personality:

Before he became a Nobody, Axel, then known as Lea, had a habit of making new friends in much the same way a child would like to adopt stray puppies (and, in fact, his best friend Isa made this comparison to him at one point). He was friendly and outgoing, quick-witted and competitive. He was a troublemaker, who would break the rules just because it seemed like a good idea at the time, and it seemed like a bit of fun. He also seemed to have an obsession with wanting to not be forgotten. His catchphrase was, and continues to be, "Got it memorized?" He was charismatic, if not a bit dorky.

As a Nobody, Axel isn't completely different from his younger self, though he has become manipulative and an excellent liar, and is willing to do whatever he needs to accomplish his goals - even to the point of gaining Marluxia's trust by killing Vexen, only to turn around and betray Marluxia as well. He also likes to make sure nobody can read him fully - while he's busy making someone think he's fooling around, he's actually lining the necessary pieces up so that whatever's he planning, he can make it happen.

On the other hand, a completely different side of him is shown around Roxas and Xion. He is very protective of both of them, and much more laid-back around them than he is around others. He is kind toward them, unlike how he is with the other Nobodies - enough so that he has gone out of his way to get them out of trouble, even when it means getting himself in trouble instead.

Even though Nobodys are supposed to be heartless creatures, unable to actually feeling emotions, Axel is shown to at least have a small amount of humanity in him when a single teardrop fell from his eye will bidding Roxas farewell, with a promise to meet him again. When he dies, he mentions to Sora that Roxas - and to an extent, Sora as well - makes him feel like he had a heart.

Abilities:

Axel has the ability to summon and control fire, which he can use either as a stand-alone ability or in conjunction with his pair of weapons called Chakrams. If there are limits to the ways he can control fire, they aren't shown. In the games, he was able to summon walls of fire and hide in them for surprise attacks, showing the amount of control he has over large amounts a time. In the manga, he is shown to have enough control over the element to simply destroy a picture without causing any harm to himself or the buildings he's near at the time. Given this information, it seems that he has a versatile range of control.

His spiked chakrams are no doubt specialized for long-range, boomerang-esque attacks, but can also be used close up in a bludgeoning manner if needed. He also has the ability to summon these at will.

Perhaps the most interesting ability Axel has, though, is the ability to open Corridors of Darkness for quick and easy travel between worlds or locations within worlds.
